Remember to breathe

One of the greatest benefits of breathing exercises to the working individual, is that they are portable and can be done anywhere, at any time! To try this simple yet effective exercise follow the instructions below and enjoy!

Start from a neutral posture. Make yourself comfortable, sit comfortably with your back touching the chair and feet on the floor.

Become aware of your breathing. Place one hand on your chest and the other over your abdomen. Breathe in and out and notice which hand is moving out and back, and by how much.

Change your breathing pattern. Try to reverse which hand moves out and back by using your diaphragm to breath. Then try breathing with a combination of abdomen and chest.

Take in an extra inhale. Once you have taken a full breath, try for the third component and evoke the upper chest by taking an extra inhale. Observing this movement may make you aware of using your diaphragm, chest or accessory breathing.

Return to neutral postion. Allow your arms to relax and drop to your sides. Allow your breastbone to be pulled slightly upward by an imaginary string from the ceiling and your shoulder blades to shift back and down along your spine.
