Study Finds that Many Patients with Back Pain Receive Unnecessary Test and Inappropriate Surgery
A study completed by the Wellpoint Institute of Health Care Knowledge found that more than 35,000 people had unnecessary imaging tests and almost 1,000 underwent inappropriate back surgery within six weeks following their diagnosis. The study also found that over $1 million dollars could have been saved by the health care system if just half of the individuals who received an MRI six weeks after reporting back pain had not received the imaging study.
